New Thoughts About Food

It’s not news to anyone who reads my blog that Kennedy is not a huge fan of food.  It’s not that she’s picky, it’s just that she doesn’t eat.  She’s busy and obviously just not hungry.

Her doctors aren’t concerned with her weight because the fact is she is growing.  I’ve never pushed the whole eating thing because I don’t want it to be a battle. I remember when I was on chemo how my mom had to push and push me to eat and I HATED it.  With that being said, this is different.  Kennedy doesn’t have toxins running through her body killing everything in sight.  Kennedy just doesn’t want to eat.

There have been MANY studies done recently that prove that kids know when they are hungry and when they are full.  Now, there’s a difference between a kid being defiant and not eating because they’d rather play, and a kid who just isn’t hungry.  Within these studies there’s been a lot of talk about what is in our food. This got me to thinking.

What exactly are we eating?

I started reading our labels (past the fat content/calories/fiber from my years of weight watchers).  I realized that even in what I thought of as our “safe” foods they had lots of things that I couldn’t pronounce.  That in anything that said “fat free” there were so many chemicals and non-natural products in our food that it made me a little sick.  I had a feeling that part of the reason I was hungry just a couple hours after eating was because I wasn’t actually eating.

So far this week I’ve been to a couple of grocery stores.  I met with a friend who has cut out preservatives and she gave me some great tips on how to do this. I’ve gotten new foods that I’m going to start using. For the past couple of weeks I’ve DRASTICALLY cut out the preservatives that are in our food.  It’s going to require more work on my part (because, you know, I’ll have to cook more and differently than I have for the past 10 years).  But, I’m excited to see what it does for us as a family.

If Kennedy is only going to eat a little bit, than she will at least eat food.
